# Who owns Barnsley FC, and why do the Companies House filings look the way they do?

Topic: Club Finances and Governance

Barnsley Football Club Limited, the UK company that runs the club, is wholly owned by **BFC Investment Company Limited**, a holding company registered in Hong Kong. That is why the UK Companies House record shows a single corporate owner holding all the shares rather than a list of individuals: the individual shareholders own the Hong Kong company, and their percentages appear in the Hong Kong Companies Registry's annual returns, not at Companies House. A supporter raised exactly this question at the [August 2026 meeting](https://images.gc.barnsleyfcservices.co.uk/a65debd0-ac45-11f1-a0bc-9359ad8c111a.pdf); because of its technical nature the Chief Executive arranged for the Finance Director, Rob Zuk, to explain it to the supporter directly, with a report back to a future FAB meeting.

### How the holding company is structured

BFC Investment Company has two classes of share. The **'A' shares**, originally 80% of the company, were bought by the investor consortium that purchased the club in December 2017; whoever holds more than half of the A shares can appoint up to four of the company's directors. The **'B' shares**, originally 20%, are held by Oakwell Holdings Limited, the Cryne family's company, and were received as part of the original purchase price rather than bought; the B shareholder appoints one director. So control of the football club follows control of the A shares.

### How the shareholding has changed

Since 2022 the club has been funded by a series of share issues, in which existing shareholders are offered new shares in proportion to their holding and can take them up or not. Neerav Parekh (through his family company, Abhajay Trade and Commerce), Julie Anne Quay (through Jamakepe Investments) and the Cryne family have taken up their allocations; Chien Lee and Pacific Media Group (Paul Conway and Grace Hung's vehicle) have not, so their percentages have shrunk with each issue. The issues recorded in the Hong Kong filings were: about £3.2 million in late 2022; £3.6 million across August and October 2023; £3 million in September 2024; £3 million in January 2025; £967,000 in September 2025; and £3.4 million in October 2025. Supporters who track the filings put the total equity put in by directors since 2022 at roughly £20 million.

After the October 2025 issue, the last one for which full Hong Kong detail has been published, the shareholding was approximately:

ShareholderShare classShare of company

Neerav Parekh (Abhajay Trade and Commerce)A66.4%
Oakwell Holdings Limited (Cryne family)B22.1%
Julie Anne Quay (Jamakepe Investments)A9.1%
Chien LeeA1.7%
Pacific Media Group (Conway and Hung)A0.7%

Because Neerav Parekh holds about 85% of the A shares, he has the right to appoint four of the five directors of the holding company, which is effective control of the club. On 13 July 2026 two Companies House filings recorded him as the person with significant control of the UK company, holding 75% or more of the shares directly or indirectly, in place of the holding company itself. No new share issue accompanied that filing and the club said shareholdings had not changed; it is best understood as formally registering the control he already had in substance.

### Where this information comes from

The structure and figures above are compiled by supporters from public filings at UK Companies House and the Hong Kong Companies Registry, and are shared here because they answer a question the FAB is asked often. They are not taken from the FAB minutes, and the FAB has not verified every figure with the club. Ownership questions from supporters have been put to the club through the FAB before, including a set of fan-submitted questions in [April 2025](https://images.gc.barnsleyfcservices.co.uk/b390dcb0-3570-11f0-a020-bd0d915a582a.pdf) and a written list in [February 2026](https://images.gc.barnsleyfcservices.co.uk/9e254a10-099f-11f1-92d2-939f6afef598.pdf) on governance, transparency, board expertise and the consortium structure, to which the club provided a written response. The club has also confirmed to the FAB that there has been no change of ownership that would engage the Independent Football Regulator's owners' and directors' tests ([minutes of 4 August 2026](https://images.gc.barnsleyfcservices.co.uk/a65debd0-ac45-11f1-a0bc-9359ad8c111a.pdf)). This entry will be updated when the Finance Director's report on the Companies House question is minuted.
