Why are we held in the car parks after the final whistle, and will it change?
This is the question the FAB is asked most often, and the club has answered it in detail several times. Parking and road-closure rules around Oakwell are not set by the club alone. They sit within a safety framework agreed with the Safety Advisory Group, which brings together the police, the ambulance service, the council and other local services, and any change has to go through that group.
The geography is the constraint. Every exit from the stadium car parks funnels onto Pontefract Road, and many supporters on foot walk up Grove Street, so cars cannot be released until pedestrians have cleared the area nearest the ground. Pedestrian safety comes first. The club's figure for the typical hold is up to about 20 minutes. The Chief Executive has also pointed to the national concern about vehicles being driven into crowds as a reason the closures exist, and disclosed that two of the club's traffic staff were assaulted in 2025 by drivers trying to get through closed sections (minutes of 4 August 2026).
Oakwell has more parking close to the ground than most clubs, and the closures are the trade-off for that. Residents in the nearby Oldfield area were once offered a paid permit scheme at about £20 a year, which was not taken up. Concerns from residents about supporters parking on side streets were raised through the FAB in December 2024.
In September 2026 the club reported that a review of road closures is under way with the council as part of wider work on hostile-vehicle measures at grounds generally. That may lead to changes, so the current arrangement will not be altered in the meantime. The club's safety team, not the traffic contractor, controls the gates, and there were 17 reported incidents in the first weeks of the 2026/27 season of vehicles moving inside the sterile zone before the closures were lifted. Supporters who have raised specific parking problems have been contacted directly by the Head of Ticketing and Fan Engagement, and he remains the point of contact for car park queries.
