Remembering a True Oakwell Legend – Barry Murphy (1940–2026)

•By Dominic Wood, Representing club sponsors and hospitality

It is with immense sadness that the Barnsley FC Fan Advisory Board has learned of the passing of one of our club's greatest ever servants, Barry Murphy, at the age of 86.

On behalf of the Fan Advisory Board and the wider Barnsley FC supporters' community, we would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Barry's family, friends and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

The word legend is often used in football, but few have earned that title quite like Barry Murphy.

Barry's remarkable record speaks for itself. Joining the Reds in 1962, he dedicated 16 years of his playing career to Barnsley Football Club, making a club-record 569 appearances, a remarkable achievement that remains unsurpassed to this day.

During his time at Oakwell, Barry was named Player of the Year in 1972, captained the side and later served as player-coach. His loyalty, commitment and dedication to the badge were everything supporters could ever ask of someone representing their football club.

His contribution was rightly recognised when he became one of the inaugural inductees into the Barnsley FC Hall of Fame in 2018, followed by the fitting honour of having the Barry Murphy Stand named after him in 2022.

But Barry Murphy's legacy cannot be measured by appearances, awards or records alone.

For generations of Barnsley supporters, Barry represented something much greater: loyalty, pride, dedication and an unwavering connection to Barnsley Football Club. His relationship with Oakwell and its supporters continued long after he hung up his boots.

Football clubs are built on their history, their communities and the people who give so much of themselves to the badge. Barry Murphy was one of those special individuals who helped shape the very identity of Barnsley FC.

569 appearances. 16 years of service. One football club. A legacy that will live forever.

Today, we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable servant to our football club, but we also celebrate a life that will forever be woven into the history of Oakwell.

Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Barry's family at this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in peace, Barry. Thank you for everything you gave to our football club.

Once a Red, Always a Red.
